Terrain Modeling Software
The DTM software module from BBSoft® processes laser scan data, survey points, and breaklines into 3D terrain models for planning, visualization, and quantity survey. Contour lines, terrain sections, slopes, borehole profiles, and rainwater analysis are fully integrated – from small construction sites to infrastructure projects on a kilometer scale.

3D terrain models are created from survey points, breaklines, and laser scan data – for applications such as landfills, retention basins, excavation pits, stockpiles, and reservoirs. Multiple digital terrain models can be managed within a single drawing, with data exchange via LandXML and DA58, including plausibility checks and subsequent editing.
- 3D terrain models are created from survey points, points with breaklines, or laser scan data
- Landfills, retention basins, stockpiles, reservoirs, and excavation pits can be planned as digital terrain models
- Breaklines are integrated into the digital terrain model – for example, contour lines without points
- Multiple 3D models can be created within a single drawing or in the BBCivil database
- Digital terrain models can be transferred from other projects – enabling database-based data exchange
- Data exchange is supported via REB, LandXML, and DA58/45/30/49 formats
- Points can be inserted into or removed from the digital terrain model at any time
- Digital terrain models can be intersected
- Plausibility checks are performed for generated digital terrain models – including holes and shifted or overlapping surfaces
- Plausibility checks are also performed for breaklines (e.g. duplicate support points)
- Digital terrain models can be isolated inside or outside a boundary line
- Intersection lines between digital terrain models and 3D solids can be generated
Slopes and berms are calculated and designed – BBSoft® connects terrain levels with configurable slope inclinations and structures steep gradients using berms. The calculation of slope angles, slope edges, and slope volumes, as well as slope design, is fully integrated into the digital terrain model module.
- Slopes are calculated – including slope angles and direction (upward, downward, automatic)
- Berms are calculated – stepped slopes with horizontal sections
- Slope edges can be adjusted – start edges can be modified and updated at any time
- Slope volumes are calculated – 3D surfaces of calculated slopes are generated and displayed
- Slope design is supported – base edges are created as 2D/3D polylines or lines with elevation
- Slope hatching includes color-coded highlighting of cut and fill areas
- Slopes can be created on inclined planes – also without a boundary line with elevation
- Profiles of slopes and berms are generated and drawn in CAD
- Plausibility checks are performed for the terrain model of the slope
- Slopes can be generated on top edges of 3D solids
- Slope settings can be exported and transferred to other slopes
- Retention basins can be planned using the slope module
Quantity survey for excavation pits, earthworks, and terrain modeling – BBSoft® calculates volumes using the prism method in accordance with REB and determines cut and fill quantities based on surfaces. The results are transferred directly into the construction billing.
Construction Billing

- Quantity survey based on contour lines – derived from elevation layers and digital terrain model comparison
- Cut and fill surfaces are displayed using hatching or +/- symbols
- Topsoil layers can be considered optionally
- Mass balancing is performed for specified target quantities
- Cost calculation is supported in €, CHF, or a user-defined currency
- Prism lists and prism numbers are documented in CAD
Quantity survey in civil engineering with BBSoft® – volume calculation between two digital terrain models using the prism method in accordance with REB. Cut and fill quantities are determined based on surfaces, and unit prices per cubic meter enable direct cost calculation in €, CHF, or a user-defined currency.
Interfaces and Data Exchange Formats
- The volume between two 3D digital terrain models (existing vs. design) is calculated

- Mass balancing is performed if specified quantities are not met
- The comparison plane can be adjusted to align cut and fill surfaces
- Prism lists and prism numbers are output in CAD
- Irregular excavation pits, quarries, and water bodies are calculated
- Fast and verifiable quantity survey across thousands of surfaces
- 3D solids are generated for cut and fill volumes
- Applications in hydraulic engineering: riverbanks, water depths, and sediment volumes
- Legends and statistics are generated with various display options
- Water level analysis supports the design of hydraulic structures
- Elevation difference layers are generated to display all depth levels
- Construction work items are assigned to objects and calculations
Borehole profiles are created and soil layers are visualized graphically – BBSoft® enables standards-compliant visualization of layer registers from core drillings and trial pits. Borehole profiles are generated in accordance with German, Austrian, and Swiss standards and displayed directly in the location plan.
- Borehole profiles are created – with graphical visualization of soil layers and samples
